My great grandmother's old cane chair got a farmhouse style makeover last month and I couldn't love it more!! I really wish I took a before picture of the chair but I was too excited to get started I forgot. It was a dark wood color and the seat fabric had been changed a handful of times.
Last year, I found this old grain sack at an antique shop in West Chester, PA. It was only $15 and it was honestly in excellent condition! Hardly any yellow stains, no tears or rips. I knew whatever project I had in store for it would have to be amazing because I couldn't bear to rip it up! So I hoarded it for over a year!!!
Then over Thanksgiving, my mom finally, finally (!!) gave me my grandmother's old chair! The chair I had longed for for a few years. I had the perfect spot for it in our new house and knew exactly then that I would recover the chair cushion with the grain sack. Have you ever checked our Miss Mustard Seed? Her projects inspired this one!!
So I got some chalk paint and went to town! Chalk paint is so easy to work with on projects like this because there is no prep work required. No sanding, stripping. And it dries super fast! And it distresses like a dream! Then my mom helped me recover the cushion seat over Thanksgiving. It was harder than it looks getting those strips as close to perfectly symmetrical and even as possible, but we did it!!
I absolutely LOVE the chair. It just a bit shabby chic and a bit farmhouse style and it works well in our family room. Now I just need to find or make a fun throw pillow and I will be all set!
