I longed for a white couch for a few years before we built and moved into our new house. When it came time to pack up all our stuff and reality set it that it would all go into storage, it was the best time to convince darling husband to sell our furniture that wasn't quite our style anymore! He finally caved and I got rid of our oversized blah couches!
Then came even more convincing! Yes we have 3 kids under the age of 8 and I wanted a white couch! Many called me crazy but I won the battle and we went to Ikea and bought the Ektorp sectional. It was reasonably priced, comfortable and it had slipcovers, which meant easy cleaning! And the best part, if heaven forbid, the kids destroyed beyond washing and repair...a new slipcover was only $200! I couldn't wait to get it home and I have not regretted the decision at all.
So the question that always came next was...how in the world do you keep the white couch nice and clean? Number one rule, is no food or drink on the couch! That is the best way to keep it as clean as possible. With three kids, a stain or two is bound to happen! I honestly only wash the actually pillows covers maybe once every 4-6 weeks. It just depends on how dirty they get. When we have company visiting, they tend to get dirtier a lot quicker! The actual large slipcover base I wash every other time, again depending on dirt level.
It takes about 3 loads to do it all. And I try and line dry the covers to prevent further shrinkage or I only dry them for about 20-30 minutes. The best is to put them on damp! Now on to the secret....it's just good ole Tide powder detergent and then an Oxi-Clean Power Pak. I swear by these! They truly do make everything whiter and brighter and gets out those tough stains!
So there you have it! Nothing crazy or fancy! A white couch just brightens up the whole room and really goes with any decor. Excuse our lack of still no furniture...we are working on it. I hope I have inspired you to not be afraid of the white!
